At Salima HIV/AIDS Support Organization (SASO), we recognize that lasting change begins with strong, resilient households. Our sustainable livelihoods programs are designed to empower communities with practical solutions that improve nutrition, increase income, and build self-reliance.

Nutrition and Food Security

We promote the use of bio-fortified foods such as vitamin-enriched maize and beans, which help combat malnutrition and strengthen immunity, especially among vulnerable populations. Alongside this, we encourage the adoption of early maturing plant varieties that ensure households can harvest sooner, reducing the risk of hunger during lean seasons. Through cookery demonstrations, families learn how to prepare balanced meals using locally available foods, reinforcing the importance of nutrition while keeping costs low.

Agriculture and Livestock Development

SASO supports crop husbandry and diversification, helping farmers move beyond single-crop dependence to more resilient farming systems. By integrating vegetables, legumes, and cereals, households can improve both food security and income. We also promote livestock rearingsuch as poultry, goats, and cattle—as a reliable source of protein and a sustainable income stream. These practices not only strengthen household resilience but also contribute to community-level food supply.

Economic Empowerment

To reduce vulnerability and foster independence, SASO facilitates Village Savings and Loans (VSLs). These community-based financial groups empower households to save regularly, access small loans, and invest in productive activities. VSLs have proven to be a powerful tool for women and marginalized groups, enabling them to build assets, meet urgent needs, and plan for the future.

Skills for the Future

At Salima HIV/AIDS Support Organization (SASO), we understand that many marginalized and vulnerable groups in our communities face daily struggles to meet their basic needs. To respond to these challenges, SASO occasionally organizes the distribution of food items, clothing, and other essential necessities to households most in need. These efforts are not routine but are carried out during times of heightened vulnerability—such as food shortages, health crises, or when families are particularly affected by poverty and disease. The distributions provide immediate relief, ensuring that families can meet their nutritional requirements, maintain dignity, and focus on rebuilding their lives. Most of these initiatives are made possible through the generosity of well-wishers, partners, and community supporters who contribute resources to strengthen our outreach. Their solidarity allows SASO to extend compassion and practical assistance to those who might otherwise be left behind. Beyond meeting urgent needs, food and essential distributions foster hope and reinforce the message that the community stands together. They remind vulnerable families that they are not alone, and that with collective support, brighter futures are possible.
